University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) researchers are working closely on the cultivation of grey oyster mushrooms by the indigenous community in Kampung Sungai Rual, Jeli, Kelantan. Despite Kampung Sungai Rual’s remoteness, the community has embraced the latest technology in mushroom cultivation and has acquired entrepreneurial skills to sell their produce at local markets. This project is driven by the UMK social enterprise program aimed at reducing hardcore poverty and is carried out in partnership with the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA). In the long run, the goal is to establish Kampung Sungai Rual as the East Coast hub for mushroom cultivation.
